Who Took Down Jared Fogle?
Rochelle Herman-Walrond, a Florida journalist, played a role in exposing the former Subway spokesperson’s true persona as a child predator.
Walrond, who wore a wire, secretly recorded his conversations with Jared Fogle, as noted by NBC News. The Florida journalist also worked with federal authorities in this case for four-and-a-half years, as reported in recent updates.
Herman-Walrond initially crossed paths with Jared Fogle when he appeared as a guest on her Florida-based radio show. It was then that the journalist noticed Fogle making inappropriate comments regarding minors.
Willing to dive further into her suspicions, Rochelle recorded multiple conversations with Jared and eventually transitioned into the role of an informant, as revealed in the documentary series Jared from Subway.
As ABC stated, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has not officially confirmed Herman-Walrond’s account.
According to federal authorities, Fogle traveled across states from 2007 to 2015, engaging in “commercial sexual activity,” including encounters with minors.
Fogle is accused of paying for sexual encounters with two minors in New York City. He was also in possession of child pornography paraphernalia that featured around a dozen kids. Unbeknownst to Fogle, his ex-business partner Russel Taylor kept a recording of their transactions.
Docuseries Explores the Life and Scandals of Disgraced Subway Spokesperson Jared Fogle
Born in Indianapolis with a Jewish upbringing, Fogle, who was trending as “The Subway Guy,” appeared in more than 300 commercials for the company.
After he shed 245lbs on a Subway diet, exclusively eating Subway sandwiches like the foot-long veggie subs, the former Subway rep was thrust into fame and stardom.
An article about him caught the attention of the fast food chain. That led to his career as a spokesperson for the chain, which significantly increased its sales, the Herald-Times reported.
Over the years, Jared would be featured in the chain’s commercials, touting his successful weight loss journey.
Investigation Discovery has a new documentary discussing the downfall of the once-celebrated Subway personality.
However, the admiration for the former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle seemed to have evaporated following his 2015 arrest.
The convicted pedophile entered a guilty plea for possession and distribution of child pornography, as well as traveling across state lines to engage in commercial sex with a minor.
The three-part series, Jared from Subway: Catching a Monster, premiered on March 6, 2023 on Discovery+.
Per a release, the docuseries opens the untold investigation story that exposed Fogle’s true character masked behind his seemingly charming persona.
The documentary features exclusive interviews with Rochelle Hernan, the Florida journalist who wore a wire to record his conversations with the sexual predator secretly.
Moreover, the docuseries explores the charges held against Russel Taylor, who was Fogle’s former business partner.
Russell Taylor pleaded guilty to 12 counts of child pornography charges and one count of distributing it. Lawyers also said that Fogle abused Taylor psychologically.
A psychological assessment of Russel contained allegations that Jared wanted him to get date-rape drugs to use on minors and that Fogle would often say to him, “Daddy needs some pictures.”
Jared Fogle, Former Subway Spokesperson, Breaks His Silence From Behind Bars: “I Royally Screwed Up”

The incarcerated pedophile and former face of Subway, Jared Fogle, penned a letter from his prison cell that cited a quote from “The Shawshank Redemption.”
Fogle, now 46, wrote, “You can either get busy living or get busy dying,” referencing his life behind bars.
In a handwritten letter obtained exclusively by The New York Post and dated November 7, 2021, Jared Fogle acknowledged his mistakes, saying, “I really royally screwed up to wind up where I am. I was selfish and entitled.”
Steven DeBrota, a former assistant U.S. Attorney and one of the prosecutors in Jared’s trial, told the New York Post that the former Subway pitchman’s experience wasn’t a result of a single mistake but rather a persistent pattern of criminal behavior.
DeBrota added that the case will always be about Fogle’s victims and not his prior achievements or present situation.
Debrota served three decades as a federal prosecutor and is now the National White Collar Crime Center vice president.
In his letter, Jared Fogle wrote that he thinks about all the people he let down, especially his family.
As for his diet in prison, Fogle wrote in his letter that he tries to avoid junk food as much as possible. He said he ate granola and protein bars. He also mentioned that he feels in tip-top shape physically and mentally.
Fogle stated that he is undergoing a rigorous fitness program to help maintain his healthy physique. He runs four to five miles daily and is currently weighing 180lbs, as per his letter.
Fogle also has a rebuttal against reports that he was studying culinary arts in prison. In his letter, he wrote about the COVID protocols put in place and how it has limited the programming offered at FCI Englewood.
According to his penned letter, Jared spends his free time watching NFL (National Football League) and college football. He also mentioned that he reads the New York Times and likes books, particularly historical fiction.
Fogle’s earliest possible release date is March 24, 2029, when he will have served 85% of his prison sentence. He also has to be registered as a sex offender.
The former Subway speaker reflects on the aspects of daily life he misses, stating that life behind bars had deprived him of so much.
Small things like resting on a comfortable mattress, walking on a carpet, dining with real silverware, and the mere convenience of having a microwave oven are some of the simple pleasures he looks forward to.
Jared Fogle Beaten by Fellow Inmate Steve Nigg
Fogle was involved in a physical altercation with his fellow inmate, Steven Nigg. It was reported that Nigg pushed the former Subway spokesman before repeatedly punching him in the face.
Steven Nigg, who hails from Chicago, was put behind bars on gun-related charges as a felon caught with a firearm. On the other hand, Fogle, an Indianapolis native, is serving a 15-year sentence for child sex tourism and child porn.
Sources claim that the altercation between Nigg and Fogle was caused by the former’s intense disdain for those who have committed acts of child molestation.
Jimmy, Steven Nigg’s brother, stated that Steven “just can’t be around those people.”
Nigg added that the docuseries focused on Jared Fogle’s case will further stroke his ego. “He’s loving this,” Nigg expressed just hours before the docuseries Jared From Subway: Catching a Monster aired.
Another fellow inmate of Fogle, Marc Brooks, shared his experience of serving eight months in the company of the convicted pedophile at the Federal Correctional Institute (FCI) in Englewood, Colorado.
According to Brooks, the disgraced former Subway spokesperson thrives in prison and recently earned a certification for culinary arts.
A photograph taken within the prison facility portrays a noticeably healthier Fogle, wearing a mint green jumpsuit during the certification ceremony alongside other inmates.
Brooks expressed that Fogle is relishing his time in prison, enjoying good meals, staying fit, and even pursuing culinary interests. He also mentioned that Fogle is free to roam around and is in a low-level security section of the prison.
Did Jared Fogle Have a Wife? Who Did Jared Fogle Marry?
Katie McLaughlin, Jared Fogle’s ex-wife, said in an interview that she did not know about Jared’s involvement in sex crimes until the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) came at the door of their home in Indiana.
McLaughlin said she was in shock and didn’t understand anything happening then.
Also, in 2016, McLaughlin went on to sue Subway, alleging that the fast food company had ideas about Fogle’s disturbing sexual interest towards children and that they didn’t do anything to address the matter.
The lawsuit stated that Subway was notified three times about Fogle’s predatory behavior, but the fast food restaurant continued featuring the pedophile in their advertisements.
The suit also alleged that in 2004, Subway received a marketing complaint about how Jared had approached an underaged girl for a sex act.
Following the allegations, Subway sent its public relations manager and a franchisee owner to ask Fogle rather than the victim. The lawsuit mentioned that Subway did not investigate the report thoroughly and failed to alert the authorities.
McLaughlin told reporters that she feels devastated knowing that her husband is a sexual predator and that his job involved him visiting schools often.
Back then, Subway had a campaign called Jared’s School Tour, which required him to visit elementary schools nationwide. Jared was also required to spend time in schools for his Tour de Pants campaign, in which he traveled the country with the pants he wore when he was still obese.
Fogle and McLaughlin married in 2010, and they had two children. Eventually, McLaughlin filed for divorce after her husband entered a guilty plea for child porn charges.
Jared and Katie share two children: a son named Brady and a daughter named Quinn. During Jared’s scandal, Katie voiced her worries about her children’s welfare.
Katie mentioned that her primary concern was making sure her children were safe. She said her children were starting to become curious about jail and their father’s whereabouts.
McLaughlin said she will not lie to her kids. If they ask more questions, she wants to answer them.
Where the Former Face of Subway Is Now
Jared Fogle’s actions came to light in 2015 when Russel Taylor, the then-director of the Jared Foundation, was arrested on charges of voyeurism, child pornography, and child exploitation.
The Jared Foundation is Fogler’s nonprofit organization that aims to raise awareness regarding childhood obesity.
The arrest of Taylor and the following investigation brought Fogle to the authorities’ spotlight. According to a CNN report, Fogle’s house was raided in July 2015.
Fogle’s friend, Rochelle Herman-Walrond, helped the FBI with the investigation. Walrond gave the investigators the recordings of her calls with Fogle. She also detailed that Fogle once told her that he thought middle school girl students were “so hot.”
The former Subway pitchman pleaded guilty to a count of traveling to have sex with a minor and another count of receiving child pornography in August 2015.
Fogle’s court case revealed that he went across state lines to pay a minor for sex, and he had received over 400 child pornography videos from Russel Taylor.
In November 2015, Jared Fogle was sentenced to 15 years of jail time. He also paid $1.4 million in restitution to his 14 victims.
According to NBC, as of the moment, Fogle is serving his sentence in Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Englewood and has to serve at least 13 years before parole can be considered.
